What is ringworm / fungal infection ? ( 甚麼是生癬 / 真菌感染? )

Fungi like to grow on the keratin layer of the epidermis, so fungi can grow on the skin in different parts of the body. A fungal infection of the trunk and extremities is called tinea corporis, and an infection of the nails is called onychomycosis; tinea pedis (commonly known as athlete's foot) is a fungal infection of the feet, and tinea cruris is a fungal infection of the groin.

The fungal infection is usually transmitted through direct contact, such as sharing the towels with infected person. In the early stages of ringworm, patients may experience itchy skin, rash of skin peeling. The rash gradually forms a ring and expands. Since the appearance of eczema looks like ringworm, some patients mistakenly think that they have eczema and use steroid-containing creams which further aggravate the fungal infection.

For mild fungal infections, topical antifungal creams can be used to kill the fungus. In more severe fungal infections, oral antifungal drugs are required. In some cases, onychomycosis can be treated with a laser, which uses the energy of the laser to generate heat in the infected nail, thereby killing the fungus in the nail.

In daily life, maintaining good personal hygiene is important. Keep body dry, and dry the feet and toewebs thoroughly after bathning. Since fungal infections are contagious, it is more important to keep clean and good hygiene to avoid spreading the fungus to family members or others.
